• In the beginning…

Bold & Noble was born at our kitchen table. Our vision: to create beautifully-made screen prints people would love. While Granny babysat, we worked nights on our first collection—which keeps on growing.

    Jane Tobitt, Creative Director

Jane works on designs for the new collections and looks after our Stockists and accounts. She traces her passion for design back to her grandpa’s beautiful advertising portfolio which inspired her to follow in his footsteps. She met David while studying design at Newcastle, and after a decade working for consultancies in London, she’s as fired-up and optimistic about design as ever. When she’s not in the studio, you’ll probably find Jane digging in the garden or rummaging at a flea market.

    David Wardle, Creative Director

David is an industrious designer and illustrator, and he’s worked for the most prestigious publishing houses. His book covers are always in demand, and his hands are always covered in ink. He says his granny started it, by keeping him supplied with endless rolls of wallpaper for doodling. Perhaps she had a pact with Jane’s grandpa. David is also a serious distance runner—the type who does ten miles before breakfast and supper—and he’s represented England.

  • Designs that don’t cost the earth…

…in both the financial and ecological sense. We make products that stand the test of time, by hand, in the old-fashioned way. And we believe in living. If it’s a sunny day, we’ll be out there looking for inspiration—providing all the work’s done.

    Our vision

Our vision was to create beautifully made homewares people would love and that is what we hope we’ve done. Merging maps and typography, graphic prints inspired by nature our designs are printed using traditional methods onto recycled or carefully sourced materials. Our love of design sees us trawling flea markets and, weather permitting, heading out of town, into the wild to seek inspiration from the environment.

    Small is beautiful

From those first few months where we’d walk down to the Post Office with poster tubes propped up on the buggy to dispatch our orders to today’s more streamlined service, we like to think we haven’t lost any of the personal touches or quality. If anything we’ve improved the process for our Customers and having Sarah and Nicole to help means we’re doubly productive.

  • Who looks after your products?

We have a great team, as you’ll discover if you ever have to call on us. We’re all huddled up in our Hertfordshire studio working (and chatting) usually with the kettle on and the radio playing. Meet the people behind the scenes.

    Sarah and Stewart

    Sarah

Sarah is a dab hand at plate spinning. She carefully manages the retail orders and press releases between the school runs. She’s worked in the production department for Condé Nast for titles like GQ Magazine, Tatlerand World of Interiors so is very sympathetic to tight deadlines. If you have a press enquiry, an image request or just fancy a natter about your order, she'll be all ears.

    Stewart

When the packing is complete, the orders are grouped into international and inland deliveries. Stewart from Royal Mail comes by the studio at 1.30pm every day to collect our parcels, have a quick natter and take our deliveries on their safe onward journey to you.

  • Made lovingly in the UK by hand

The human touch continues through to the production phase. We use traditional methods and all our collaborators are based in England. That way we can meet the printers, try out colours and materials until we’re happy to press the big green button.

    Design

Where do the ideas come from? Sometimes they’re in our head for years (on the back burner I guess) before they make it onto paper, other times we have an immediate urge to work up a design. Either way, we tend to spend a good few weeks designing and crafting each idea until it gets the thumbs up from all concerned. Then they’re artworked and ready to print.

    Tangible objects

How it looks, feels and smells – that is all part of the alchemy for us. We carefully select the materials based on their green credentials, their weight and surface texture. When that process is complete we test inks to find the perfect colour intensity and coverage. We want our products to feel considered and loved when they land on your doorstep.
